He was shocked at the high rates of obesity and diabetes among Pacific Islanders who had been exposed to a Westernized diet (as of ten years ago, studies suggested that Honolulu residents eat more fast food than those of any other US city). He advocated a return to a sensible, healthy diet: lots of brown rice and other starches (like poi), pulses and beans, fish, and fruits and vegetables. Dr. Andrew Weil would agree for the most part, perhaps de-emphasizing the importance of starches. These days I fall off the wagon sometimes (pepperoni pizza is the usual culprit), but Dr. Weils books and daily dose of advice on vitamins, diet, exercise, and especially reducing stress help me cheerfully return to normality. He has a holistic approach to health, and believes that a healthy diet includes tasty, but not incredibly low-fat, recipes. You can visit his site at www.drweil.com and see for yourself. The two books that we refer to all the time, the latter especially for recipes, are Eight Weeks to Optimum Health and Eating Well for Optimum Health. They make interesting and enjoyable reading, and we hope they will encourage you to change your life for the better, whether you are a vegetarian or not.
