Despite its age, V for Victory: Utah Beach is still one of my favourites: a battalion-level game on the D-Day landings and the fight to reach Cherbourg. The game’s age (1991) really manifests itself only in the graphics, which are dated, as you’d expect. On the other hand, they are by no means primitive, and for this level game there is probably not much advantage in leading-edge graphics.

It has some impressive features that are well implemented. For instance, several different levels of attack are available, from probe to all-out assault, and the game enforces an unusually realistic level of divisional integrity by imposing penalties on units that stray too far from their HQ.

V for Victory: Utah Beach is still available both as a standalone game or as part of a bundle that includes the Market Garden and Velikiye Luki games in the same series.

A  more recent game, from HPS, the small company better known for Aide de Camp, is Panzer Campaigns:Normandy ’44. This is a look at a similar situation, and it’s quite interesting to compare these two games to each other. Normandy ’44 covers the entire D-Day front, including all five beaches. The scale is mostly at battalion level, although the Allied units hit the beaches initially at something closer to company size. They can be merged to form larger units, though, if they survive. The beach landing scenarios are interesting and fun; however, once off the beaches, progress is slower. The AI is decent, but can be slow to process in the larger scenarios. A good game overall, Normandy ’44 also has some original features.

All of the above games are available from Chips & Bits, which ships games and accessories all over the world.
