One of my current favourite authors is Chaz Brenchley. His work is difficult to categorise, apart from his recent Outremer fantasy series. It’s most often described as falling into the horror genre, but if I had to apply a label I’d probably settle for contemporary fantasy: most of his books have a completely normal, mundane setting in modern Britain, with the exception of a single fantasy/supernatural element.

However you categorise his writing, Brenchley has produced some of the best books I’ve read in a long time. His most obvious strength is the quality of his writing—the characterisation is strong and the dialogue is totally believable; as a result, suspension of disbelief is never a problem.

Two titles I’d recommend as an introduction to Brenchley are Dead of Light and Dispossession. Dead of Light is probably the closest among those I’ve read to deserving the “horror” label. Its central character is the black sheep of a criminal family, which rules the (unnamed) town of the setting, who finds himself drawn back into contact with his family members as they start dying in gruesome ways. (There is a sequel, Light Errant, which I haven’t got round to reading yet, but I have high hopes of it.)

Dispossession uses the well-worn device of a lead character with amnesia, but succeeds thanks to the strength of the writing and the originality of the supernatural element.

These three Chaz Brenchley books are available from Amazon.co.uk: Dispossession, Dead of Light, and Light Errant. Please let us know what you think of them. And if you would like to find out more about Chaz Brenchley and his work, visit his website at www.chazbrenchley.co.uk.
