Life imitates art. I recently read Gregory Benford’s 1980 Nebula award winner, Timescape. Only days before, I had seen a synopsis of an article in Nature about an NEC Institute experiment in which a laser pulse of “waves of light particles” appeared at the finish line, as it were, before they actually left their starting point.

As I read about the experiment, I remember thinking that it could lead to a way to send information ahead, or back, in time. And then I picked up the Nebula award-winning Timescape, which deals with exactly that subject. It is one of the few Western science fiction books dealing so realistically with scientists and their work. Benford’s writing should please the technically minded reader as well as the one who enjoys a thought-provoking story.

My next recommendation is my favourite book, The Princess Bride. Few films do justice to the books they’re based on, but the casting of Robin Wright Penn, Cary Elwes, and Mandy Patinkin as the leads was inspired. The author, William Goldman, wrote the screenplays for All the President’s Men and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, among others. He is quite the story teller, and The Princess Bride has everything you’d want for a page-turning, humourous, and touching read.

And my last recommendation this time is the seemingly ubiquitous Memoirs of a Geisha. It’s a fascinating look at another culture and another time. Unlike most classical Japanese literature, which describes events and locations but hardly ever the characters’ feelings, it is accessible to Western readers. In fact, I found it very hard to put down.

So if you’re in or near Europe, Africa, or Asia, then check out Timescape, The Princess Bride, and Memoirs of a Geisha.

Or if you’re in or near North or South America, you can order from Amazon.com: Timescape, The Princess Bride, and Memoirs of a Geisha.
