This page is actually about software and graphics manuals that we have found useful. The first, which is helpful to anyone who writes, edits, or does desktop publishing, is The PC is Not a Typewriter, by Robin Williams (no relation to the comedian, as far as I know). This book expands on the classic The Elements of Style as regards publishing, including electronic documents.

Ms. Williams has authored and co-authored several other books for people who find themselves involved in graphic design and DTP. Two of my favourites are The Non-Designer’s Design Book and The Non-Designer’s Scan and Print Book.

The books are available from Amazon.co.uk:
  • The PC is Not a Typewriter
  • The Non-Designer’s Design Book
  • The Non-Designer’s Scan and Print Book

Or you can order them from Amazon.com:

These days, presentations to clients and even colleagues often call for the use of more sophisticated visual aids than flipcharts or overhead transparencies. Two books that help you with designing a multimedia presentation include Creating Dynamic Multimedia Presentations Using Microsoft PowerPoint, by Carol M. Lehman, and Creating Cool PowerPoint 97 Presentations, by Glenn E. Weadock and Emily Sherrill Weadock.

These books are also available from Amazon.co.uk:

  • Creating Cool PowerPoint 97 Presentations

    And from Amazon.com:

The most useful desktop publishing program I've found so far, Adobe PageMaker, can have a steep learning curve for those who are used to Microsoft Word, so I recommend checking out PageMaker 6.5 Complete as a useful reference guide.

For an overall look at web design, try Web Design in a Nutshell. If you're interested in using FrontPage to get on the web, we recommend Mastering Microsoft FrontPage 2002 Premium Edition. And finally, to start getting your images ready for webpages, you could have a look at Adobe Photoshop Elements: A Visual Introduction to Digital Imaging.

Finally, if you want to put some interactivity into your presentations, perhaps saving them on a CD and animating elements, or if you want to have a Shockwave-enabled website, two of the most-recommended books are Director 8 Demystified and Director 8 and Lingo Authorized. After I get to grips with Director, I'll need to learn Director 8.5, which incorporates 3D, but I want to start with the basics of Director first.

The books are available from Amazon.co.uk:
  • Director 8 Demystified
  • Director 8 and Lingo Authorized

    They're also available from Amazon.com:
